Where groups actually meet in Marrakech

Interchanges that work as a fair midpoint for most groups. togather will not always land on one of these - it answers for your actual starting points - but they are the ones that come up again and again.

  1. Jemaa el-Fnaa

Walking in the medina, plus car to the Koutoubia side

The great square at the heart of the medina, and the default fair answer for a group staying or living inside the old city, where most streets are walkable only.

  2. Bab Doukkala

Walking, plus car via the medina's western ramparts

A main gate on the western edge of the medina, and a good middle for a group split between the old city and Gueliz, since cars can reach it without entering the souks.

  3. Place du 16 Novembre

Car and walking in central Gueliz

The central square of the new town, surrounded by cafes and shops, and the fair pick for a group living in Gueliz and the residential districts to the north.

  4. Carré Eden

Car and walking along Avenue Mohammed V

A shopping and dining complex in central Gueliz, compact and easy to find for anyone in the group who does not know the city well.

  5. Marrakech railway station

ONCF trains, plus car from Gueliz and Hivernage

The arrival point for anyone coming from Casablanca, Rabat or Fes, and the fair answer when part of the group is travelling in by train.

  6. Menara Mall

    Car via Avenue Mohammed VI

A large mall on Avenue Mohammed VI, and fairer than the medina for a group living in Hivernage and the newer districts along Avenue Mohammed VI.

How to pick a fair meeting point in Marrakech

Marrakech is two cities with different rules. Inside the walls, the medina is a maze of lanes where most journeys are on foot and cars cannot follow. Outside it, Gueliz, Hivernage and the newer districts are laid out for driving along wide avenues like Avenue Mohammed V and Avenue Mohammed VI.

So the map midpoint misleads in both directions. A spot that looks central might be deep in the souks, a long walk from the nearest gate for anyone arriving by car, or out on a boulevard that is quick to drive to but a long way on foot from the medina. Petit taxis and the city buses fill the gaps for many people, but the fair answer depends on who is walking and who is driving. In the summer heat, shaving ten minutes off someone’s walk matters more than usual.

Bab Doukkala bridges the medina and the new town

If everyone is in the old city, Jemaa el-Fnaa is the obvious answer. A group split between the medina and the new town is better served by Bab Doukkala, which cars can reach without entering the souks, or by Place du 16 Novembre and Carré Eden in Gueliz. When most people live along Avenue Mohammed VI, Menara Mall keeps them from crossing town.

Set walking for anyone starting inside the walls and car for everyone else. togather then works out each journey on its own terms, lanes on foot for some and avenues by car for others, and suggests the places where the travel times are nearly level. It settles the plan faster than arguing over which gate to use.

Meeting halfway in Marrakech - questions

Where is a fair place to meet halfway in Marrakech?
Inside the medina, Jemaa el-Fnaa. For a group split between the old city and the new town, Bab Doukkala or Place du 16 Novembre in Gueliz. togather works out which from everyone's real walking and driving times.
Why is the medina hard for meeting points?
Because cars cannot get through most of it. A point that looks central on the map can be a long walk through the souks for someone arriving by car, so each person's real route matters more than the straight-line distance.
Does togather time petit taxis or buses?
No. Set each person to walking or car; a petit taxi trip is close to a car journey on the same roads. togather finds a spot where nobody's trip is much longer than the rest.
