With three addresses, “halfway” needs redefining

Between two addresses, halfway is unambiguous: there is a line and you split it. Add a third and the word quietly loses its meaning. There is no line between three points, and the centre of a cloud of five addresses is not a place anybody is travelling to - it is an artefact of the arithmetic.

The question groups are actually asking is which place is equally easy for everyone to reach. That has a real answer, and it is the place where the average journey is short and the longest trip is closest to the shortest.

Why most halfway tools stop at two

Because two is where the geometry works. Take the coordinates, split the difference, search for a cafe near the result. It is a clean calculation and it is why almost every tool in this category is built around a pair of inputs, with “multiple addresses” bolted on as repeated pairs.

Repeating pairs does not generalise. Averaging five coordinates is worse, because an average is dominated by whichever addresses happen to cluster - four people in one district will pull the answer to themselves and leave the fifth with a long trip, and the result will still look balanced.

Time, not distance, and one mode per address

A city’s road and rail networks decide how long a journey takes, and they are not laid out to make distance a good proxy. The same two kilometres can be four minutes or twenty. So the comparison has to happen in minutes, and each address has to be timed on the network that person is really using - the driver on the roads, the passengers on the rail network, the one who walks in on foot.
