Where groups actually meet in Dakar

Interchanges that work as a fair midpoint for most groups. togather will not always land on one of these - it answers for your actual starting points - but they are the ones that come up again and again.

  1. Place de l'Indépendance

Car into the Plateau, plus walking to the TER's Dakar station

The central square of the Plateau, the city's business district at the tip of the peninsula, and the fair answer for a group living in the Plateau, Médina and the older southern districts.

  2. Sea Plaza

    Car via the Corniche Ouest

A mall on the Corniche Ouest with cafes, a cinema and sea views, and a good middle for a group split between the Plateau, Fann, Point E and Mermoz.

  3. Les Almadies

Car via the Route des Almadies

The restaurant and hotel district at the western tip of Africa, and the fair pick for a group living in Ngor, Ouakam, Yoff and the north-west of the city.

  4. Grand Médine

    SunuBRT exchange hub, plus car

An exchange hub on the BRT corridor in the middle of the peninsula, and fairer than the Plateau for a group spread between Liberté, Grand Yoff and the Parcelles Assainies.

  5. Guédiawaye

SunuBRT terminus at the Préfecture de Guédiawaye, plus car

The northern end of the BRT corridor, which keeps a group from Guédiawaye, Pikine and the suburbs from having to travel all the way into central Dakar.

  6. Diamniadio

TER, plus car via the toll motorway

The new city east of Dakar, home to the Dakar Arena, and the fair answer when part of the group lives in Rufisque, Diamniadio or out towards the airport.

How to pick a fair meeting point in Dakar

Dakar sits on a peninsula, and its shape decides how long every trip takes. The city narrows towards the Plateau at its tip, and traffic between the centre and the suburbs is funnelled onto a handful of roads, including the corniches and the toll motorway. A friend who looks close on the map can face a slow drive if the only route runs through a bottleneck.

So the halfway point between two people is rarely fair. It can land in a quiet residential street, or on the wrong side of a busy road. Rail and rapid buses now help on some corridors: the TER runs from central Dakar out through the suburbs towards the airport, and the electric SunuBRT links Petersen with Guédiawaye. togather can only time a transit leg where Google Maps carries that line’s timetable, so for most groups car or walking is the honest setting.

Sea Plaza for the whole city, Guédiawaye or Diamniadio for the suburbs

A group spread across the city often finds its middle at Sea Plaza on the Corniche Ouest or around Grand Médine. The Plateau suits people in the older southern districts, Les Almadies the north-west, and Guédiawaye or Diamniadio the suburbs to the north and east, so nobody has to come all the way into town.

Cars rapides and taxis carry many trips, but the fair answer still depends on whose journey is longest. On a peninsula where much of the traffic shares a handful of main roads, that is hard to judge by eye. togather times each person’s journey by car, TER, BRT or on foot and points to the places where the times come out close. Add everyone’s starting point to see where that falls.

Meeting halfway in Dakar - questions

Where is a fair place to meet halfway in Dakar?
Usually Sea Plaza or Grand Médine for a group spread across the city, the Plateau for the south, Les Almadies for the north-west and Diamniadio for the east. togather works out which from everyone's real travel times.
Does togather time cars rapides or Ndiaga Ndiaye buses?
No. Cars rapides, Ndiaga Ndiaye minibuses and clandos run informal routes that are not timed. Set each person to car or walking, and togather finds a spot where nobody's trip is much longer than the rest.
Why is the map midpoint misleading in Dakar?
Because Dakar is a narrow peninsula with traffic funnelled onto a few roads. A point between two people on the map can be quick for one and a long crawl for the other, depending on which road each has to take.
