Meet halfway in Brussels

For a group meeting in Brussels, the fairest points are usually Arts-Loi, De Brouckère, Gare du Midi or Gare Centrale - each joins metro lines with trams or trains, so most of the region reaches them with one change at most. Which one is fairest depends on where everyone starts: togather times each person door to door and finds the spots where nobody is stuck with a much longer trip.

Where groups actually meet in Brussels

Interchanges that work as a fair midpoint for most groups. togather will not always land on one of these - it answers for your actual starting points - but they are the ones that come up again and again.

  1. Arts-Loi / Kunst-Wet

    Metro lines 1, 2, 5 and 6

The only station where all four metro lines meet, so it is the fair default for a group spread across the metro, on the edge of the European Quarter and the centre.

  2. De Brouckère

Metro lines 1 and 5, premetro lines 3 and 4

Where the east-west metro crosses the north-south premetro under the city centre, a short walk from the Grand-Place and the busiest bars and restaurants.

  3. Gare du Midi / Zuidstation

Metro 2 and 6, premetro 3 and 4, trams, national rail and international trains

The biggest station in the country, and the fair pick when someone arrives by Eurostar or train from another Belgian city, or lives in Saint-Gilles or Anderlecht.

  4. Gare Centrale / Centraal Station

Metro lines 1 and 5 and national rail

Right between the lower town and the upper town, and the fair answer when part of the group comes in by train and the rest are on the east-west metro.

  5. Porte de Namur / Naamsepoort

Metro lines 2 and 6 and several bus lines

On the inner ring at the edge of Ixelles, which makes it fairer than the old centre for a group living in the southern communes.

  6. Schuman

Metro lines 1 and 5 and national rail

The European Quarter stop, with direct trains to the airport, which suits a group with people coming from work in the EU institutions or from Etterbeek.

  7. Gare du Nord / Noordstation

Premetro lines 3 and 4, trams and national rail

The northern rail hub, fairer than the centre for a group living around Schaerbeek, Saint-Josse and the communes to the north.

How to pick a fair meeting point in Brussels

Brussels looks small on a map, but the region is split into nineteen communes and its public transport is a mix of metro, premetro trams running underground, surface trams, buses and national rail. Two people a few kilometres apart can need a change in the centre, while two people much further apart on the same line can meet easily.

Arts-Loi is the stop most groups should check first, because it is the only station where all four metro lines meet. De Brouckère is the fair answer when part of the group is on the north-south premetro, and it puts you in the centre of town.

When a train station is fairer

Many groups in Brussels include someone commuting in by train. For them, Gare du Midi, Gare Centrale or Gare du Nord can save a change, and the fairest spot for the whole group moves towards the station they arrive at.

The hill between the lower town and the upper town also makes walking and cycling times uneven, so distance alone is a poor guide. togather times each person on the mode they actually use and returns the spots where nobody is stuck with a much longer trip.

Add everyone’s starting point, set how each person travels, and send the result to the group chat.

Meeting halfway in Brussels - questions

Where is a fair place to meet halfway in Brussels?
Usually a metro interchange such as Arts-Loi or De Brouckère rather than the map centre, though Gare du Midi or Porte de Namur may be fairer depending on where people live. togather works out which for your group.
Does it work with trains from outside Brussels?
Yes. Enter a starting point in Leuven, Mechelen or anywhere else, and togather times the real trip including the train. A group with commuters often lands on a main station rather than a metro stop.
Can someone cycle while the rest take the metro?
Yes. You set the mode per person, so a cyclist is timed by bike and the others by metro, tram or train. Brussels has steep hills between the lower and upper town, and real cycling times account for that.
