Meet halfway in Johannesburg
For a group meeting in Johannesburg, a city where most people drive, the fairest points are usually Sandton, Rosebank or Melrose Arch in the northern suburbs, or Park Station when Gautrain riders are involved. togather times each person door to door on the mode they use, highways included, and finds the spots where nobody is stuck with a much longer trip.

Where groups actually meet in Johannesburg
Interchanges that work as a fair midpoint for most groups. togather will not always land on one of these - it answers for your actual starting points - but they are the ones that come up again and again.
Sandton
Gautrain, plus the M1, N1 and Rivonia Road
The business district with Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square on top of a Gautrain station, and the default fair answer for a group spread across the northern suburbs.
Rosebank
Gautrain, plus Oxford Road and Jan Smuts Avenue
One Gautrain stop closer to the city than Sandton, walkable to the Rosebank malls and markets, and fairer when part of the group starts in Parktown, Melville or the inner suburbs.
Park Station
Gautrain, Metrorail and long-distance coaches
Next to Braamfontein at the edge of the CBD, where the Gautrain meets the city's rail and coach terminus, so it is the fair point for a group with people coming from the south or from Pretoria by train.
Melrose Arch
Car via the M1 and Corlett Drive
A walkable precinct of restaurants just off the M1, and a good middle for a group split between Sandton, Rosebank and the eastern suburbs such as Bedfordview.
Midrand
Gautrain, plus the N1 between Johannesburg and Pretoria
Halfway along the Gautrain between the two cities, which makes it the fair answer when the group is split between Johannesburg and Pretoria rather than clustered in either.
Fourways
Car via William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road
The anchor for the north-west suburbs, with Fourways Mall as an easy landmark, and fairer than Sandton for a group living in Fourways, Lonehill and towards Lanseria.
Maponya Mall (Soweto)
Car via Chris Hani Road and the Soweto Highway
Soweto's best-known mall and an easy landmark to find, which keeps a group weighted towards Soweto and the south from having to drive all the way north to meet.
How to pick a fair meeting point in Johannesburg
Johannesburg is a driving city first, and its travel times are shaped by highways rather than by distance. The M1, the N1 ring and the routes towards Soweto and Pretoria carry most trips, so a friend ten kilometres away along a highway can arrive sooner than one five kilometres away through suburban traffic lights.
The map midpoint ignores all of that. It tends to land somewhere residential with nowhere to sit down, or on the wrong side of a highway with no easy way across. Public transport helps only along specific lines: the Gautrain runs reliably between Park Station, Rosebank, Sandton, Midrand and Pretoria, while the Rea Vaya buses have had service suspensions on their Soweto routes this year.
Sandton suits the north, Maponya Mall suits Soweto
For a group living in the northern suburbs, Sandton and Rosebank are the obvious candidates, with Melrose Arch a good compromise when someone is coming from the east. Fourways suits the north-west, and Midrand is the fair answer when part of the group is in Pretoria. A group weighted towards Soweto is better served by Maponya Mall than by asking everyone to head north on the highway.
Minibus taxis and ride-hailing fill the gaps for many people, but the fair answer still comes down to whose drive is longest at that hour. togather checks every person’s route at the time you plan to meet, highway or Gautrain, and suggests places where the drives and rides come out at a similar length. Pick one with easy parking and the plan is mostly made.
Meeting halfway in Johannesburg - questions
- Where is a fair place to meet halfway in Johannesburg?
- For a northern-suburbs group, usually Sandton, Rosebank or Melrose Arch. Once people are coming from Soweto, the south or Pretoria, the fair point moves, and togather finds it from everyone's real driving or Gautrain times.
- Can I rely on public transport in Joburg?
- The Gautrain is reliable on its corridor between Park Station, Sandton and Pretoria. Rea Vaya buses have had suspensions on their Soweto routes as recently as 2026, so most groups set each person to car, walking or Gautrain.
- Does togather include minibus taxis?
- No. Minibus taxi routes are informal and not timed. Each person can choose car, transit where it exists, bike or walking, and the result is built from those journeys.
