Meet halfway in Vancouver

For a group meeting in Vancouver, the fairest points are usually Waterfront, Commercial-Broadway, Broadway-City Hall or Lougheed Town Centre - SkyTrain stations where the Expo, Millennium and Canada lines connect. Which one is fairest depends on where everyone starts: togather times each person door to door and finds the spots where nobody is stuck with a much longer trip.

Where groups actually meet in Vancouver

Interchanges that work as a fair midpoint for most groups. togather will not always land on one of these - it answers for your actual starting points - but they are the ones that come up again and again.

  1. Waterfront

Expo Line, Canada Line, SeaBus and West Coast Express

The downtown terminus where the Expo and Canada lines meet the SeaBus, so it is the one station that works for Richmond, Burnaby and the North Shore at once.

  2. Commercial-Broadway

Expo Line, Millennium Line and the 99 B-Line

The East Van crossing on The Drive, and fairer than downtown for a group spread between Mount Pleasant, Burnaby and anywhere along the Millennium Line.

  3. Broadway-City Hall

Canada Line and the 99 B-Line

Where the Canada Line meets the Broadway buses, and a good middle for a group split between Kitsilano, Fairview, Mount Pleasant and Richmond.

  4. Lougheed Town Centre

    Expo Line and Millennium Line

The eastern crossing of the two lines, which makes it the fair answer for a group living in Burnaby, Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities rather than in the city.

  5. Bridgeport

Canada Line, where the Richmond and YVR branches split

The last shared stop before the Canada Line splits for Richmond-Brighouse and YVR-Airport, so it suits a group with people on both branches.

  6. Metrotown

Expo Line and a large bus loop

Not an interchange between lines, but the busiest stop in Burnaby, and often the fairest choice for a group in South Burnaby and south-east Vancouver.

How to pick a fair meeting point in Vancouver

Vancouver is shaped by water, and that is what makes the map midpoint misleading. False Creek, Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River leave the region joined by a small number of bridges and one ferry, so two people a few kilometres apart in a straight line can be far apart in practice. A friend in Lonsdale and a friend in Kitsilano are close on paper and separated by the inlet in real life, and a driver between them is at the mercy of whichever bridge is backed up.

So start with the stations where lines meet. Waterfront joins the Expo and Canada lines with the SeaBus. Commercial-Broadway joins the Expo and Millennium lines, with the 99 B-Line running along Broadway overhead, and Lougheed Town Centre is the same pairing further east.

East Van groups meet at Commercial-Broadway

Downtown is not automatically fair. A group in East Van and Burnaby is better served by Commercial-Broadway, and one centred on Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities by Lougheed Town Centre. If half the group is in Richmond and half in Kitsilano, Broadway-City Hall saves everyone a ride to the waterfront and back, and Bridgeport suits a group split between Richmond and Sea Island.

The bridges are the local factor. Someone driving across the Lions Gate or the Second Narrows at rush hour can lose more time than the distance suggests. togather times each person on their own transport, SkyTrain, SeaBus, car or bike, and points to places where the journeys even out. Add where everyone starts and see whether downtown actually wins.

Meeting halfway in Vancouver - questions

Where is a fair place to meet halfway in Vancouver?
Usually a SkyTrain interchange rather than the map's middle - Waterfront and Commercial-Broadway are the classic answers, and Broadway-City Hall or Lougheed Town Centre can be fairer depending on where the group lives. togather works out which.
What if someone is coming from North Vancouver?
Their trip is timed on the mode you set for them. On transit that usually means the SeaBus into Waterfront, which is why downtown so often wins for a group with someone on the North Shore and the rest spread across the city.
Can some of us cycle?
Yes. Set the mode per person. On the flatter east side and along the seawall, a bike is often faster than a bus and a SkyTrain change, and togather times that ride on its own rather than averaging it in.
